Movember In Canada

Movember

With great moustache comes great responsibility– and great puns! I moustache you a question but I’m shaving it for later! A good idea is right under your nose! Life is like a moustache. It can be wonderful or terrible, but it always tickles! Whether you love the cookie duster or not, there’s no denying that the motivation for the crumb catcher during November is for a great cause! The Movember Foundation has raised over $677 million globally since 2003, and funded over 1000 programs relating to testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and physical & mental health in men. Maintaining the upper lipholstery during the month of November helps to raise awareness and create positive change for men’s health. In 2003 two Australian men met up for a beer in the bustling capital city of Melbourne and after reflecting upon the fact that the lower brow had fallen out of fashionable favour, an idea was formed. From 30 Mo Bros in Australia 12 years ago, to almost 5 million supporters – men AND women- in over 20 countries to date, their idea created a revolution. Sporting a lip rug in the month of November is a statement that says ‘I will not stay silent about the men’s health crisis’. Events are held throughout the month of November allowing men and women around the world to sport the ‘stache & donate to the cause. But why follow when you can lead? If the foundation is something close to your heart or you’re the biggest fan of the flavour saver in your group of friends, you can even host your own Mo Party or create an active event that encourages physical activity. If you’re a year round poster boy for the bristle batons, maybe you can try out the endless list of moustache styles to really draw attention to your furry friend. The Pencil? The Magnum? Maybe even The Zorro? There is no limit to the ways in which you can raise awareness for your fellow men around the world who may be, or may have beaten, some of the following;

Prostate Cancer: THE most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canadian men and the second most common cancer in men worldwide. In 2012 more than 1.1 million cases were recorded and even when treatment is successful, it can physically and mental alter those who have been affected (not just those who are diagnosed). The Movember Foundation is one of the largest non-government funders of research and services for prostate cancer in the world. So guys, as uncomfortable as it is to even say the words, if you’re between 40 and 70 you should be getting screened approximately every 4 years, but the technologies and treatments are constantly changing so consult your doctor.

Testicular Cancer: This is the most common cancer found in Canadian men between 15-29 years old . In more than 95% of cases, a diagnosis of testicular cancer means established treatment options and a good outcome. Checking yourself regularly is important and if you notice any changes, you should follow up with your doctor. The Movember Foundation funds programs such as their Global Action Plan and breakthrough research that has lead to several important discoveries in understanding and effective treatment of testicular cancer.

Mental Health: Approximately 11% of Canadian men will experience some form of major depression in their lives. Worldwide, one man dies every minutes from suicide. Mental illness, especially in men, may not be as easy to recognize and most of the time if they do, they are not comfortable asking for help. Initiatives such as Heads Up Guys, Like Father Like Son & Farmstrong are just a few of the programs that the Movember Foundation invests in to make sure no man ever feels like he has no way out.

Physical Inactivity: The Canadian Society for Exercise Physically (CSEP) suggests a guideline of 150 minutes (just 2 1/2 hours, or 30 minutes 5 days a week) of exercise per week and yet only one quarter of Canadian men met this number. Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, causing 3.2 million deaths worldwide every year. Taking up a mild sport such as golf is a good way to get you moving, even if you just play the front 9. Walking the dog around the block can benefit you both.
