Money-Minded People!  Who are Money-Minded People and how do they think?

I recently had a conversation with a disgruntled investor. His portfolio over the last number of years has performed poorly and he was willing to abort all future investing. He told me, I would rather bank my savings and earn 1% than risk anymore of his money. He basically had lost his mindset to invest. No encouragement or wisdom I shared with him unlocked his non-investment mindset.

Upon reflection, it reminded me of my younger years (0-20ish) growing up on a farm in Southern Alberta. Each and every spring, every farmer would prepare their equipment, the soil, and plant the valuable seed with expectations of a bumper crop. Optimism was high! Yet, by as early as late spring it was obvious that some of the crops were not going to be bumper crops, while others were still on track for bumper crop. How was it that a crop of wheat looked sickly, and another, divided only by a barb wire fence, looked healthy and had the potential of a bumper crop? What was the secret?

The secret was in the preparation and mindset of the farmer and I was fortunate to learn from one of the best, my dad. He was an excellent farmer! Planning, preparation, timing, studying, and consistent execution made for years of above average crops. In fact, the realty of a bumper crop was slim. If everything came together to produce a bumper crop, even the unprepared farmer would have a great crop. However, it was the other years, the non-bumper crop years that showed the true skill set of the farmer.

Money-Minded farmers and investors need to plan, prepare, understand and study the market cycles, weather patterns, market conditions, and execute consistently year after year. What if the farmer didn’t plant a crop in spring? What if the investor never invested again?
