It’s the most WONDERFUL time of the year! Or is it?
With Christmas right around the corner, the trees are being put up, the stores are getting busier and people are getting stressed. Follow these 10 steps to reduce stress and enjoy your Holiday Season!
- Stick to a Budget– Setting up a budget and sticking to it will keep the post- holiday woes from setting in. You can do this by allocating a certain amount to each person’s gift, buying fewer gifts this year, or using a do-it-yourself approach and making gifts!
- Get an early start – No one wants to be “that person” on Christmas Eve, rushing around buying all their gifts at the last minute. If you plan ahead and get all of your presents earlier, you will have more time for other activities as well as more time to wrap everything and THIS will help you stick to your budget by not making expensive, last minute decisions.
- Ask for help! –You don’t always have to take everything on yourself- share tasks! Instead of being the host, the chef, the entertainment and the Santa, ask family members for help. That way you can delegate those certain tasks that you may not like. Another great idea is a potluck dinner where everyone who attends brings a side, that way you only need to make the turkey (this is also a budget conscious option).
- Get outside– Exercise and sun (hopefully) will boost your mood. Sunlight is rich in vitamin D, which tends to elevate people’s moods and energy levels while exercising releases endorphins and has been shown to help people relax and cheer up!
- Get a good sleep – How well you sleep each night can influence how much stress you experience. Getting a good night’s sleep will have you feeling rested and ready to tackle your day.
- Forget perfection – Things NEVER go the way you plan. Get rid of unwanted stress by rolling with the complications as they come!
- Give back – Donating to your favourite charity or offering your time in a soup kitchen will give you a clearer picture of what you really have to be thankful for.
- Slow down and enjoy the festive season – If you think back to your childhood, Christmas brought only joy! Do things you did as a child to bring back those joyful memories. You can build a snowman, make snow angels or drive around town looking at all of the Christmas lights.
- Consider ditching traditions – If every year you are concerned with making the turkey the same way your grandmother did, you may be causing yourself added stress! Sometimes new traditions become the best ones! Decorate the tree the way you want and use new recipes; the spontaneity may help you enjoy your holiday more. And you never know, you may love the new traditions more than the old ones!
- Try to ward off sickness – There are many ways you can avoid a cold or flu this winter. Washing your hands often, getting a flu shot, changing your toothbrush every three months; there are even beneficial foods that you can eat to keep the sniffles away. Keeping healthy will decrease added stress when Christmas comes knocking.
