December Market Update: Cloud Seeding
Cloud Seeding is known as a form of weather modification. In more scientific terminology, it is the attempt to change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds, by dispersing substances into the air that serve as cloud condensation, which in turn alters the microphysical processes within the cloud. The purpose of this process is to increase precipitation, snow, or rain, as well as minimize hail or fog around airports for the safety of planes. In fact, many countries around the world have systems in place for cloud seeding—the leader of the pack being China. They seed arid areas that need rain for valuable crops or even seed clouds around the capital city of Beijing to reduce smog by inducing rain to wash it away. In fact, China was so concerned about the pollution issues at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games that they used cloud seeding to clear the air of any hazardous substances.
Growing up in a small farming town in Southern Alberta, cloud seeding—or rain-making as I knew it—was a hot topic for numerous years as the area suffered a horrible drought when I was a teenager. It was common at that time to find local farmers gathered at the town’s CO-OP coffee shop discussing politics, religion, and of course, the horrible crops. During those dry, dusty, and poor crop years it was not uncommon to hear debates as to whether or not cloud seeding would help bring rain that was so desperately needed for the farmers’ prosperity. Cloud seeding really was a process or enactment of creating hope and optimism!
New Year’s predictions are often filled with optimism and hope—much like the hope and optimism that was brought to farmers through cloud seeding! My small, scientific, and pessimistic mind would tell me not to count on cloud seeding; however, my large, creative, and optimistic mind would create hope that it would rain.
Does cloud seeding coincide with real estate? Do so called experts and investors in real estate “cloud seed” the market, or even our own investment properties? Are we desperately “seeding” a market that is arid? Do we “farm” a market that consistently brings poor results, yet tell yourselves that the market will improve? It is human to think and hope for the best—a task that comes naturally to the entrepreneur-minded doers. However, optimism without backing it up with fundamental market data that is current, factual, and location sensitive is really cloud seeding with the hope that it will rain. Instead, put your trust in experienced real estate advisers and fundamental data that guarantees abundant crops.
