Reflections on Resilience: Embracing Change and Finding Hope Amidst Uncertainty

With Remembrance Day around the corner, I’m reminded of how time reshapes our perspectives. As a veteran, I’ve seen how moments that once felt overwhelming eventually calm, becoming part of a larger story.  It’s a bit like flipping through old news articles of the 80’s on the “Unaffordable” housing crisis in the Lower Mainland—yes, even back in the 1980s, people believed the market couldn’t get pricier. And yet, here we are today, having the same discussions but still finding ways to adapt and grow.

November seems to carry a special weight this year. With the recent election decisions here in BC, and our Southern Neighbours wrapped up in their own “Most Important Election in History”. The phrase has become a bit of a cliché, hasn’t it? Every generation sees its challenges as make-or-break moments, yet somehow, life always finds a way forward.

I can’t help but wonder if, 30 years from now, we’ll look back and see them differently. Time has a way of taking today’s “once-in-a-lifetime crises” and turning them into tomorrow’s, “Oh yeah, remember that?” Heck, we might even look back at 2024 and think, “Ah, those were the days when a house only cost that much!” Knowing what you know now, if given the chance, I wonder if some of us would buy up everything we could back in the 90’s or even 2000’s… I know I sure would try, so why am I not thinking that way now?

Yes, the future can seem daunting with housing prices and uncertainties, but today’s “impossible” challenges have a way of becoming tomorrow’s stories of resilience. In a world that loves to highlight scarcity and stress, maybe we could all focus a little more on the abundance around us—starting with those closest to us. After all, while the numbers and headlines can paint a grim picture, there’s still so much right in front of us to appreciate; the freedoms we enjoy that others sacrificed so much for, the company of our family and friends (not to forget our furry companions), and all the luxuries we take for granted.

Who knows? Perhaps we’ll look back at 2024 and realize that today’s worries were the seeds of tomorrow’s growth. As unpredictable as the world may seem, spring always comes after winter, and sunrise always follows the dark. The military always tried to teach me the importance of turning “Hopelessness” into merely “Problem Solving”. We’re part of a resilient cycle of change, and sometimes, that’s all we need to keep going.

Maybe the sky isn’t falling after all. We’re just moving forward, step by step, season by season. And that’s more than enough reason to be hopeful.
