Staying safe on Halloween

Goblins and princesses and superheroes – oh my! Before all of the cute, costumed kids show up at your door, make sure that your house is ready for tiny visitors and your family is ready to enjoy a safe night out. Here are a few helpful Halloween safety tips to consider before and during October 31.

At home:

–          Survey your front porch. Are your outdoor lights working? Do your stairs need to be swept? Tidying your front porch and walkway will make sure all of the ghosts and zoo animals will be safe.

–          Consider using battery-powered candles or glow sticks to light up your jack o’ lanterns. If your pumpkins get bumped, it’s good to know that you won’t need to go running for your fire extinguisher.

Out and about:

–          It’s the tried and true rule: Always look both ways before crossing the street! Stay on sidewalks and try to walk against the flow of oncoming traffic.

–          Keep an eye on costumes for anything that could cause your kids (or someone walking past them) to trip.

–          Accessorize costumes with flashlights, reflective tape and glow sticks. The more, the merrier! (And the safer!)

–          Make sure that you and your kids leave plenty of room between yourselves and any decorative candles or lamps. Costumes tend to be made of highly flammable materials.

–          Watch your props! Opt for face paint instead of masks, which can hinder your child’s vision. Check your pirate’s sword and your princess’ wand to ensure that they don’t have any sharp edges that could harm them if they trip and fall.

–          If your kids are heading out on their own, remind them to stick together and stay in well-lit neighbourhoods. Give them a charged cell phone in case of emergency.
