Sprucing up your home for spring! Part II

If you’re not ready to tackle the outside of your house yet, there are plenty of ways to kick-start spring-cleaning the inside. Here are a few of our ideas to get your home ready for spring!

Check your safety measures

Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Buy a fire extinguisher. Even though you’re looking forward to spending more time outside, make sure that everything’s in order to keep you safe in case anything goes wrong. Stock up on batteries so you won’t need to scramble the next time they run out.

Wash your bedding

Pillows, duvets, sheets and shams – throw them all in the washing machine and give them a good, deep clean. While everything is drying, flip or rotate your mattress and vacuum up any dust bunnies under your bed.

Scrub down your kitchen

Wipe down the inside and outside of cupboards. Sort your pantry, throwing out any expired canned goods and items that are past their expiration date. (If you’re stockpiling items that you know you won’t eat, consider passing them along to your local food bank – they can always use more!)

Open the windows

Freshen up musty rooms, like your basement or attic, by opening up windows and letting some clean, fresh air in.  It’s a good time to clean your windows, too. Tackling the job while the weather is cooler means that fewer streaks will be left behind.

Clean out storage areas

If you’re a late bloomer who still hasn’t stashed the Christmas decorations away (or if you silently shook your fist at the overwhelming piles of stuff you had to shove out of the way in order to store the Christmas stuff), now’s a good time to sort through your stuff and clean out your storage spaces.

If a task like this feels too overwhelming, set a timer for 15 – 30 minutes.  Tackle what you can until the timer goes off and then reevaluate whether to start it again or to leave the rest of the task for another day.
